The Edinburgh Festival Fringe (also referred to as The Fringe or Edinburgh Fringe, or Edinburgh Fringe Festival) is the world’s largest arts festival, which in 2018 spanned 25 days and featured more than 55,000 performances of 3,548 different shows in 317 venues.
Edinburgh is Scotland’s compact, hilly capital. It has a medieval Old Town and elegant Georgian New Town with gardens and neoclassical buildings. Looming over the city is Edinburgh Castle, home to Scotland’s crown jewels and the Stone of Destiny, used in the coronation of Scottish rulers. Arthur’s Seat is an imposing peak in Holyrood Park with sweeping views, and Calton Hill is topped with monuments and memorials.

In early 2019 I spent four months living in a tent at Estancia Ranquilco, a remote horse and cattle ranch nestled deep in the foothills of the Andean mountains in Northern Patagonia, Argentina. Largely stripped of modern conveniences and offering a chance to experience off-grid, communal living, it is both a gentle, and harsh, return to primitiveness.
Yet the magnetic pull from Ranquilco reaches far beyond the realms of sentimentalism. It is not merely a vague summation of its parts. Of earth, water, sun, grass and trees. It is the past as well as the present, built into the stonework and in the footsteps of the worn paths on the last edges of land, hanging on the horizon.
For those devoted to this way of life, it is simply a return to the familiar.
In this week’s episode of “Travels with a Curator,” join Deputy Director and Peter Jay Sharp Chief Curator Xavier F. Salomon on a journey to Genoa, one of his favorite cities in Italy. A rich maritime and financial center in the 17th century, Genoa was a natural draw for artists at the time, including the great Flemish painter Anthony van Dyck. The Frick owns three portraits painted by Van Dyck while he resided in Genoa, allowing viewers to peek into the past at a flourishing city at the height of its power and influence.

I documented a solo trip to Big Sur last year, encountering gossamer fog that rolled over hairpin curves high above azure swells then at sunset transformed into pink cotton candy. My dream is to live cliff side as a hermitic cat lady novelist. Calgon, take me away!
Big Sur is a rugged stretch of California’s central coast between Carmel and San Simeon. Bordered to the east by the Santa Lucia Mountains and the west by the Pacific Ocean, it’s traversed by narrow, 2-lane State Route 1, known for winding turns, seaside cliffs and views of the often-misty coastline. The sparsely populated region has numerous state parks for hiking, camping and beachcombing.
Few experiences can beat diving into a pool in the fresh air, swimming with blue skies above you. Whether it’s a dip into a busy and bustling city pool on a sweltering summer day, or taking the plunge in icy waters, the lido provides a place of peace in a frenetic world.
The book begins with a history of outdoor pools – their grand beginnings after the buttoned-up Victorian era, their falling popularity in the 20th century, and the newfound appreciation for the outdoor pool, or lido, and outdoor swimming in the 21st century.
Journalist and architectural historian Christopher Beanland picks the very best of the outdoor pools around the world, including the Icebergs Pool on Bondi Beach, Australia; the 137m seawater pool in Vancouver, Canada; Siza’s concrete sea pools in Porto, Portugal; the restored art deco pool in Saltdean, UK, and the pool at the Zollverein Coal Mines in Essen, Germany. The book also features lost lidos and the fascinating history behind the architecture of the pools, along with essays on swimming pools in art, and the importance of pools in Australia. In addition there are interviews with pool users around the globe about why they swim. The book is illustrated throughout with beautiful colour photography, as well as archive photography and advertising.

Ancient city of temples Bagan lies in the desert of Myanmar and is known as a dry zone. The fierce monsoon can barely touch this region with its rains and storms. Years pass without a single lightning storm.
Imagine my luck when during my visit one night 3 lightning storms passed over Bagan and I was able to capture a bunch a timelapses with my 3 cameras. This is a movie about that lucky night and the monsoon clouds that pass over and by Bagan.
