Science: The James Webb Space Telescope Launches, Genes For Long Life Spans

The James Webb Space Telescope was first conceived in the late 1980s. Now, more than 30 years later, it’s finally set to launch in December. 

After such a long a road, anticipation over what the telescope will contribute to astronomy is intense. Daniel Clery, a staff writer for Science, joins host Sarah Crespi to talk about what took so long and what we can expect after launch.

You might have heard that Greenland sharks may live up to 400 years. But did you know that some Pacific rockfish can live to be more than 100? That’s true, even though other rockfish species only live about 10 years. Why such a range in life span? Greg Owens, assistant professor of biology at the University of Victoria, discusses his work looking for genes linked with longer life spans.


Walks: Campidoglio To Trevi Fountain, Rome (4K)

This Rome tour starts at the Campidoglio which is a hilltop square designed by Michelangelo. This square is lined with museums and offers views of the Roman forum. On our way to the Colloseum we pass the Forum Romanum ruins on both sides of the Via dei Fori Imperiali. Probably the most famous sight in Rome is the Colosseum which we almost circle around. We go uphill after the Parco San Gregorio al Celio. There we look around some more busy areas with cafés and restaurants, where the locals have their lunch. At last we get to the Piazza del Quirinale and Trevi Fountain, which is another famous sight and one of the most popular selfie backgrounds for tourist in this great city.

Lisbon is the main port of Portugal, which is located at the mouth of the Tagus River. This city is located in the picturesque place with numerous hills. That’s why Lisbon is also called “city on seven hills”. Founded as a large settlement of the tribe of Iberian Lusitano, Lisbon has started its quick development due to its convenient location. After this it was soon conquered by the Roman Empire, then it belonged to the Arab Caliph, and later the French knights set up their ownership. Only in 1256 Lisbon has officially become the capital of Portugal. However, after a large earthquake that had destroyed many historic buildings, the city often became an arena for political clashes. Only the end of World War II has finally brought the city its long awaited peace.

The rooms have been restored to the year 1855 when its owner Sir Allan Napier MacNab, 1st Baronet, was at the height of his career.
