Barbara Ireland edits the 36 Hours, Explorer, and forthcoming Cultured Traveler series of travel books in collaboration with The New York Times and TASCHEN. A writer and editor based in upstate New York, she is a former deputy Travel editor and deputy Op-Ed page editor at The New York Times. She is a graduate of Cornell University and was a John S. Knight journalism fellow at Stanford University.

New Travel Videos: “Across The Land” In Canada By Scott Portingale (2020)

Across the Land is a compilation of timelapse sequences shot across Canada in 2017 and is part of a cinematographic installation project called Across the Land. The film explores Canadian landscapes where technological modernity and natural spaces intersect.
When shooting a one shot film across Canada (see other videos) my camera assistant and I drove an average of 6-8 hours a day and would often stop to shoot a few time-lapse shots on the roadside if we saw something of interest. We’d also take advantage of the morning/evening light around one of the many campgrounds we would stay at. This resulted in hundreds of gigabites of raw image sequences by the time we finished the 9000km journey. I edited this film with imagery shot during the project and cut in a few shots I captured over the years to help tie some of the scenes together. New Photography Books: “Neon Road Trip” By John Barnes (March 2020)
The vivid photographs are arranged according to the signs’ imagery, with sections such as Spirit of the West, On the Road, Now That’s Entertainment, and Ladies, Diving Girls & Mermaids. Sixteen of the most iconic landmark signs include brief histories on how that unique sign came to be. A resource section includes a photography index by location and a Neon Museums Visitor’s Guide.

Neon Road Trip chronicles the history of the commercial neon sign with a curated collection of photographs capturing the most colorful and iconic neon still surviving today.
John Barnes studied art, graphic design, sculpture and photography, earning a BFA degree in documentary photography from the University of Delaware 1984. He worked as a commercial advertising photographer for over fifteen years both on the east coast and in San Francisco, and has been a fine art photographer for the last 30 years. He recently spent the last two years traveling around the United States and Canada photographing iconic neon signs. John resides in Seattle but spends most of his time traveling taking photographs.
