News: Top 5 Stories For June 22, 2021 (Reuters)

1. Voters in New York City head to the polls to select Democratic and Republican nominees for mayor, following a campaign dominated by debate over public safety.

2. Severe thunderstorms tore through the Chicago area after the National Weather Service said a ‘confirmed large and extremely dangerous tornado’ had touched down in a western suburb of the city, causing damage.

3. The White House will pursue other initiatives to boost voting rights even if a contentious federal bill to counter state voting restrictions passes the Senate, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said.

4. Las Vegas Raiders’ defensive end Carl Nassib said he was gay, making him the first active National Football League player to come out publicly.

5. Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte threatened to jail people who refuse to be vaccinated against the coronavirus as the Philippines battles one of Asia’s worst outbreaks.

News: Top 5 Headlines For April 16, 2021 (Reuters)

Five stories to know for April 16: The Indianapolis FedEx shooting, Chicago police body camera video of Adam Toledo shooting, Derek Chauvin 5th amendment, Biden meets Japan’s Suga and Jimmy Lai gets 14 month prison sentence.

1. A gunman opened fire at an Indianapolis Fedex. The mass shooting left eight people dead and several others injured. The gunman took his own life, police said.

2. Chicago releases body camera footage of police shooting Adam Toledo, a 13-year-old boy. Toledo appeared to be raising his hands in an alley more than two weeks ago. The nine-minute video from officer Eric Stillman’s body camera showed showed Stillman yelling “Stop” to Toledo before he caught up to him and ordered him to show his hands. Toledo appeared to raise his hands right before Stillman fired one shot and then ran to the boy as he fell to the ground. Following the incident Chicago police department said Adam Toledo had a gun in his hand.

3. Former Minneapolis policeman Derek Chauvin waived his right to testify to the jury about his part in the deadly arrest of George Floyd . Judge Peter Cahill denied the prosecutor’s request to admit test results as new evidence in the case, saying it was too last-minute in a way that was prejudicial to Chauvin. Cahill warned prosecutors that if a witness even mentioned the existence of the new test results, he would declare a mistrial.

4. President Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga will present a united front on Taiwan, China’s most sensitive territorial issue, in a summit meeting.

5. Hong Kong media tycoon Jimmy Lai was sentenced to 14 months in prison while nine other activists received jail time or suspended sentences for taking part in unauthorized assemblies during mass pro-democracy protests in 2019.

RB’s Top 100 Independents ranking is a measure of the highest-grossing independent restaurants. Only restaurant concepts with no more than five locations are considered “independents” for the purpose of this list (although it’s possible a restaurant that shares a name with a chain but is owned and operated separately would qualify, such as Smith & Wollensky in New York City). Rankings are based on gross 2018 food and beverage sales. Information was gathered through surveys. When data wasn’t provided, sales were estimated based on public information, similar concepts and other factors.

Art Video: “American Gothic” By Grant Wood (Art Institute Chicago)

On this episode of Art Institute Essentials Tour, take a closer look at American Gothic, painted by Grant Wood in 1930. One of the most famous American paintings of all time, this double portrait by Grant Wood debuted at the Art Institute in 1930, winning the artist a $300 prize and instant fame. Wood intended this Depression-era canvas to be a positive statement about rural American values during a time of disillusionment.

Grant DeVolson Wood (1891-1942) was an American painter best known for his paintings depicting the rural American Midwest, particularly American Gothic, which has become an iconic painting of the 20th century.
