Sailing Views: High Speed Sail GP In San Francisco

San Francisco Bay is playing host this weekend to a new sailing competition called Sail GP. The races are short, the boats are very fast and, if Saturday’s crowd was any indication, it may be the wave of the future.

This is only the second season for Sail GP, an international sailing competition that patterns itself on the Grand Prix auto racing circuit. The 50-foot catamarans ride up out of the water on foils, turn on a dime and can reach speeds over 60 mph.

“Sail GP is all about high-adrenaline, close-to-shore racing,” said chief marketing officer Erica Kerner. “It is the fastest boats on the water. It is absolutely incredible.”

Alpine Skiing: Blue Pistes In Bad Gastein, Austria (4K)

Bad Gastein is an Austrian spa and ski town in the High Tauern mountains south of Salzburg. It’s known for the belle epoque hotels and villas built on its steep, forested slopes. The Wasserfallweg is a path offering views of the town’s central Gasteiner Waterfall plummeting to the valley floor. Gothic frescoes adorn St. Nicholas Church. The Gasteiner Museum chronicles the town’s thermal springs and notable guests.

Short Films: ‘The Last Ski Maker In Scotland’ (2022)

The uncertain future of skiing in Scotland has inspired Jamie Kunka to make sustainable skis out of wood. Based in his cabin in the Scottish Highlands, Jamie is the last ski maker in Scotland.

Jamie began teaching himself how to make his wooden skis after watching a Vimeo Staff Pick about a wooden-surfboard maker in Vancouver Island, Canada. vimeo.com/27702618. Ten years on, The Last Ski Maker in Scotland is part homage to this original film and part a celebration of the power of film to inspire us all.

For the past two years Australians have been limited to travel within their own country. This is not all bad news when you realise the diversity of fishing options in Australian waters. In early 2021, Josh Hutchins, of Aussie Fly Fisher, and film-maker, Kane Chenoweth, set off to one of Australia’s most remote regions in search of clean water, tropical vibes and big fish – the Cocos Keeling Islands.

With bountiful bonefish, intermittent shark-dodging, and relaxed Island vibes – Cocos was full of surprises.

Despite schools of bonefish and the odd-GT distraction, we had a primary goal for the trip: a Bumphead Parrotfish. We’d seen it done in the Seychelles, and we wanted to catch one in our home waters. Let the mission begin…
