Sustainability: Redesign The World Competition – ‘Carbon Neutral Rings’

Pawel Rymsza’s proposal to house humanity in a network of ring-shaped structures built around huge algae-rich lakes is the first of 15 visionary projects shortlisted for the Redesign the World competition powered by Twinmotion.

Called Carbon Neutral Rings, Rymsz’s proposal is to create a network of enclosed carbon-neutral cities for humanity to live in. Each ring is built around a huge reservoir of algae, which would be used to filter the air inside the rings and act as a carbon sink to absorb the city’s emissions.

The carbon dioxide absorbed by reservoirs would ensure the cities are carbon-neutral initially and would become carbon-negative over time as humanity shifts to less carbon-intensive technologies.

Redesign the World is the ultimate design competition, which called for new ideas to rethink planet Earth to ensure that it remains habitable long into the future. Launched in partnership with Epic Games, the contest asked entrants to visualise their concepts using architectural visualisation software Twinmotion.

Design: Hyperloop Italia & Zaha Hadid Architects

Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) has signed an agreement with Hyperloop Italia to jointly design its next phase of work.

Using passive magnetic levitation technology powered entirely by renewable energy, Hyperloop propels passenger and cargo capsules through low pressure tubes to minimize friction, requiring only a fraction of the energy required to power the modes. traditional public transport.

The combination of energy from renewable sources and regenerative braking systems allows Hyperloop’s infrastructure to produce more energy than it consumes. Air-conditioned passenger capsules travel in sealed tubes and are unaffected by external conditions.

Design: Italy Approves New Retractable Arena Floor For Colosseum In Rome

The Italian government has approved plans designed by engineering firm Milan Ingegneria to create a remote-controlled, retractable floor within the Colosseum amphitheatre in Rome.

The design competition for the new Colosseum arena floor, launched at the end of 2020, originated in 2014 with an idea by the archaeologist Daniele Manacorda and was included in the Strategic Plan for Great Cultural Projects in 2015.

The design envisages bringing to life the integral components of the largest amphitheater in the ancient world which is estimated to have held up to 87.000 spectators. The indoor arena measures 86 × 54 m with an area of 3.357 sqm. The new platform is to be placed at the height it had at the time of the Flavians and takes up the layout of the original plan. The beams will rest on the existing walls, with no mechanical anchors or any invasive impact, and will be completely reversible. Having the new floor will allow us to fully understanding its original uses and functions, while the technological solutions will guide visitors in discovering the complex organizational and scenic machine that governed the shows in Roman times.

Top Innovation & Design: ‘Sunne’ – Indoor Window Solar Lamp (Video)

Dutch designer Marjan van Aubel has developed a solar lamp that is designed to be hung in front of windows so it can generate its own energy.

Called Sunne, the light is equipped with photovoltaic cells and an integrated battery, allowing it to harvest and store enough energy throughout the day to light up a room at night. Van Aubel designed the lamp as part of an ongoing project to normalise solar technology by bringing it inside homes.

“To facilitate a shift in our perception towards solar, it also needs to be more accessible to a larger group of people,” she told Dezeen. “People need to be able to familiarise themselves with it and have it in their surroundings. Sunne is a first step to integrating solar energy into our everyday life.”
