Timelapse Travel: ‘Asturias’ In Northwest Spain (2020)

Filmed and Edited by: Juan Carlos Cortina

This cover image from the Asturian viewpoint of Angrilu is the mark of a trip that includes three years of photographs in Asturias in collaboration with the Oviedo photographer David Álvarez Velicia. Touring the coasts of Ribadesella, Llanes, Luarca, the Picos de Europa and the national parks, the most hidden viewpoints, the strangest rock formations of the Cantabrian coast, a work has been born that shows the beauty of the landscapes of Asturias. The timelapse scenes show an augmented reality with which the passing of time is perceived in a few seconds and Asturias is a unique place to perform this technique.

The Principality of Asturias, a region of northwest Spain, is known for its rugged coast, mountains, religious sites and medieval architecture. Regional capital Oviedo’s San Salvador Cathedral houses religious relic the Shroud of Oviedo. Nearby on Mt. Naranco stands the 9th-century churches of San Miguel de Lillo and Santa María del Naranco, the latter originally built as a palace for King Ramiro I of Asturias.

Video Trailer: ‘A Perfect Planet – BBC Earth’ With David Attenborough

A Perfect Planet is an awe-inspiring exploration of Earth’s power and fragility.

PERFECT PLANET

Planet Earth is perfect. It orbits at the perfect distance from the sun; it tilts at just the right angle and has a decent sized moon to hold it in place. On top of that, the day-to-day workings of the planet naturally serve to nurture animals and plants.

This five part series will show how the forces of nature – weather, ocean currents, solar energy and volcanoes – drive, shape and support Earth’s great diversity of life. In doing so, it will reveal how animals are perfectly adapted to whatever the environment throws at them.

Artist Profile: French Landscape Painter Joseph Vernet – ‘View Of Tivoli’

In the 18th century, Joseph Vernet was uncontestably the greatest landscape painter of his generation. In this episode of Anatomy of an Artwork, discover how the ambitious and poetic landscape of ‘View of Tivoli’ pays tribute to the Italy Vernet loved so dearly.

Claude-Joseph Vernet was the leading French landscape painter (with Hubert Robert) of the later 18th century. He achieved great celebrity with his topographical paintings and serene landscapes. He was also one of the century’s most accomplished painters of tempests and moonlight scenes.

Vernet was born at Avignon and trained there with his father, Antoine, and with the history painter Philippe Sauvan. He spent the years 1734 to 1752 in Rome, where he studied classical landscapes in the tradition of Claude and Gaspard Dughet, as well as the dramatic paintings of Salvator Rosa. In Rome he was influenced by the contemporary Roman topographical painter Giovanni Paolo Panini. He had many English clients and admirers in Rome, including Richard Wilson, whom Vernet is thought to have encouraged as a landscape painter.

Filmed and Edited by: Timo Oksanen

Shooting auroras above the majestic Mount Otertinden has been on my bucket list for years now, and on October 20th and 21st my dreams came true. Orionids meteor shower was peaking at that time, so there were quite a few shooting stars as well.
