Travel: France’s Most Beautiful Hiking Paths

FRANCE 24 (April 20, 2023) – Of the 370 long-distance hiking paths that criss-cross the French countryside, some in particular stand out. In Finistère, on the Atlantic, the Chemin du Pouldu merges with the Brittany coast. Its contrasts of green and blue have inspired many artists, such as French painter Paul Gauguin.

Down in the Cévennes, Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson gave his name to the Chemin Stevenson, where you can still come across donkeys. As for the route to Santiago de Compostela, one of the oldest long-distance hiking paths in France, it contains delights for the eyes and the soul.

Maine Views: An Aerial Tour Of Kennebunkport

With a rich history in agriculture and shipbuilding, Kennebunk today retains her connection to the land and sea. With easy access to the ocean, river, and wooded trails, the town is one of those special communities that seems to have it all, even the prestige of name (there is only one Kennebunk in the country).

Kennebunk balances a rural feel with true convenience – Portland is only 25 miles away and catching the Downeaster train in Wells makes the commute to Boston a snap. Featured on the town seal is the Lafayette Elm, which was planted to commemorate General Lafayette’s 1825 visit to Kennebunk. The handsome tree is one of the only survivors of the Dutch Elm that destroyed hundreds of trees that once lined Kennebunk’s streets.

The residents are a bit like the mighty tree: able to withstand the changing of seasons and passing of time with a sense of quiet nobility. In this tight-knit, laid-back community, it’s easy to be a good and helpful neighbor.

The Algarve, Portugal’s southernmost region, is known for its Atlantic beaches and golf resorts. Whitewashed fishing villages on low cliffs overlooking sandy coves were transformed in the 1960s, and now its central coast between Lagos and Faro is lined with villas, hotels, bars and restaurants. The region’s western Atlantic coast and rugged interior are less developed.

Views: Landscapes And Cities Of ‘Portugal’ (4K)

Portugal is a southern European country on the Iberian Peninsula, bordering Spain. Its location on the Atlantic Ocean has influenced many aspects of its culture: salt cod and grilled sardines are national dishes, the Algarve’s beaches are a major destination and much of the nation’s architecture dates to the 1500s–1800s, when Portugal had a powerful maritime empire.

Aerial Views: ‘Richmond & Norfolk, Virginia’ (4K)

Richmond, the capital of Virginia, is among America’s oldest major cities. Patrick Henry, a U.S. Founding Father, famously declared “Give me liberty or give me death” at its St. John’s Church in 1775, leading to the Revolutionary War. The White House of the Confederacy, home of Confederate President Jefferson Davis during the Civil War, is now a museum in Court End, a neighborhood known for Federal-style mansions.

Norfolk is a waterfront city in southeastern Virginia. It’s home to Naval Station Norfolk, a massive naval base on Chesapeake Bay. Nauticus is a maritime museum that features the Battleship Wisconsin, a huge WWII warship. The Chrysler Museum of Art showcases a vast collection of glass art, plus European and American paintings and sculpture. The riverside Virginia Zoo is home to bears, birds, lions and farm animals.

Nature: ‘Snowy Owls’ On The Beach In Plum Island, Massachusetts (Video)

“Sunday Morning” pays a visit to some snowy owls on Plum Island, Massachusetts. Videographer: Michael Clark.

Snowy owls arriving in Massachusetts tend to seek local habitats that mimic the Arctic tundra where they spend most of their lives. Popular sightings include Westport, New Bedford, Nantucket, Orleans, Duxbury Beach, and of course, Plum Island. A snowy owl was recently spotted in the Middlesex Fells Reservation!

Plum Island is a barrier island located off the northeast coast of Massachusetts, north of Cape Ann, in the United States. It is approximately 11 miles in length. The island is named for the wild beach plum shrubs that grow on its dunes. It is located in parts of four municipalities in Essex County.

Ocean Wildlife: A Manatee Migrates To Warm Water

Despite weighing upward of 1200 pounds, manatee bodies have relatively little fat to protect them from the cold. Anything below 68 degrees is a death sentence. The solution: an annual inland migration, to the warm waters of Florida’s natural springs at Silver Springs State Park.

Manatees are large, fully aquatic, mostly herbivorous marine mammals sometimes known as sea cows. There are three accepted living species of Trichechidae, representing three of the four living species in the order Sirenia: the Amazonian manatee, the West Indian manatee, and the West African manatee.
