Top Aerial Travel Videos: ‘Nepal At Night’ (2020)

Directed by: Tim Kemple

Aerial Cinematography: Anson Fogel
Edit by: [yes our intern] Daniel Martin
Song : LUX by Ryan Taubert

Special Shout Out to: Curtis Morgan – who’s work has and continues to inspire our team.

Five years ago, during the end of a particularly cold Nepali winter, we traveled to the high Himalaya to explore the limits of high altitude aerial cinematography. It was one of the most ‘extreme’ film projects we had embarked on as a team, but as we watched the images come through the monitors, there was nothing but giant smiles and the stress of the journey was gone. Maybe it was the lack of oxygen, but damn Mt Everest looks sexy in 8k 🙂

All that took a dramatic turn a month after we returned. One of the most devastating earthquakes of the last century hit the very villages we had spent time exploring. The buildings, and even some of the people we had spent time with were gone. We learned later that our close friend had family members perish in the landslides that were a result of the earthquake. We were in shock.

Out of respect for the communities that were devastated and because of the sheer struggle we all had of celebrating a place in the midst of crisis; a large portion of the footage was shelved. The dreams of creating something ‘bigger’ left for a later time.

And then 2020 happened.

Looking to challenge ourselves in the midst of the pandemic and with a brand new intern bouncing in his virtual ‘Zoom Call’ chair; we decided to dust off some of that Nepal footage and see if we couldn’t make something that would make us all smile.

So with that, I present to you… Nepal at Night. A journey into the high Himalaya after the sun goes down. When the electric sea of stars, and even brighter moon rise over the roof of the world. Part fact, part fiction. 100% a reflection of the dreams our Camp4 Crew are having right now.

Travel & Nature Videos: Kerguelen Islands, France

Located 13,000 kilometres from the French mainland, in the middle of the Indian Ocean, the Kerguelen archipelago is home to a maritime nature reserve that has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2019. On land, thousands of elephant seals spend their days basking in the sun. The seabed, which has remained untouched, is teeming with rare fish. Hundreds, perhaps even thousands of organisms, have yet to be logged. FRANCE 24 takes you to discover this unique ecosystem.

Travel & Culture Video: ‘Mother Ganga’ – Ganges River, Varanasi, India (2020)

Filmed and Edited by: Tom Butler

Varanasi is chaotic, intense, and beautiful. The ancient city is situated on the banks of the River Ganges and is often considered the spiritual home of India. A place where you see and feel the morning and evening rituals, where pilgrimages are made to bathe in the holy waters at sunrise to purify, where many cremations take place along the river’s edge, and where it is believed moksha — an escape from the cycle of reincarnation — can be achieved. It was truly mesmerising to be in the presence of Mother Ganga and experience the weight of Varanasi first hand.

The Ganges (or Ganga  is a trans-boundary river of Asia which flows through India and Bangladesh. The 2,704 km (1,680 mi) river originates from the Gangotri Glacier of western Himalayas in the Indian state of Uttarakhand, and flows south and east through the Gangetic Plain of India and Bangladesh, eventually emptying into the Bay of Bengal.

Varanasi is a city in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh dating to the 11th century B.C. Regarded as the spiritual capital of India, the city draws Hindu pilgrims who bathe in the Ganges River’s sacred waters and perform funeral rites. Along the city’s winding streets are some 2,000 temples, including Kashi Vishwanath, the “Golden Temple,” dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva.

This film was shot back in February 2020, before the travel restrictions were in place due to the pandemic.
