English Country Estates: Flete House In Holbeton
Twelve glorious acres of manicured grounds surround partly Elizabethan Flete House, former seat of the Mildmay family, which overlooks Ermington and Dartmoor, enjoying ‘probably the finest situation in Devonshire’ according to Cornish poet and historian Richard Polwhele (1797).
At Holbeton in the South Hams, not far from Georgian Modbury, it was used as a maternity hospital in the Second World War and has now been converted into 29 apartments, retaining the principal rooms (library, dining, drawing and billiard rooms and others) for communal use, exclusively for over 55s.
Aerial City Views: Spokane – Eastern Washington (4K)
Spokane is a city in eastern Washington state. It’s home to the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture, which explores the region’s history through exhibits on art, culture and Native American heritage. Next door, Tudor-style Campbell House dates from the early 1900s. Vast Riverfront Park, site of the 1974 World’s Fair, has a sculpture walk. In the park, a cable car offers views over tumbling Spokane Falls.
Alpine Drives: The Susten Pass In Switzerland (4K)
Susten Pass (el. 2260 m.) is a mountain pass in the Swiss Alps. The pass road, built from 1938–1945, connects Innertkirchen in the canton of Bern with Wassen in the canton of Uri. A 300-metre long tunnel crosses the pass at 2,224 metres. The pass is popular with tourists, especially for the views of the Stein Glacier on the south side.
Walking Tour: Valencia – Southeastern Spain (4K)
The port city of Valencia lies on Spain’s southeastern coast, where the Turia River meets the Mediterranean Sea. It’s known for its City of Arts and Sciences, with futuristic structures including a planetarium, an oceanarium and an interactive museum. Valencia also has several beaches, including some within nearby Albufera Park, a wetlands reserve with a lake and walking trails.

Verona is a city in northern Italy’s Veneto region, with a medieval old town built between the meandering Adige River. It’s famous for being the setting of Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet.” A 14th-century residence with a tiny balcony overlooking a courtyard is said be “Juliet’s House.” The Verona Arena is a huge 1st-century Roman amphitheater, which currently hosts concerts and large-scale opera performances.

The elegant “American Colony Hotel” in Jerusalem is an island of tranquility in a troubled city. The grand hotel has lived through all of Jerusalem’s serious crises. Everyone is welcome here, no matter where they come from or what they believe. The name “American Colony Hotel” goes back to a group of 19th Century American pilgrims. In its early days, the grand hotel was located among olive groves outside Jerusalem’s city walls. For over a hundred years, many parties to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict have shaken hands, eaten and drunk here together. People mingle here in a way they would never do elsewhere. Behind it all is the fascinating story of Anna and Horatio Spafford, who, after several tragic events, moved from the US to the Holy Land with a community of devout Christians. With diligence, skill, and an insistence on neutrality and tolerance despite political difficulties, they created a hotel in a truly special location. Its atmosphere continues to attract illustrious guests from the worlds of politics, diplomacy, literature, art and entertainment.

Porto Venere is a village on the Ligurian coast of northwestern Italy. It’s known for Porto Venere Regional Natural Park, a protected area with trails and dive sites. The park encompasses Palmaria Island, dotted with beaches and caves. The Gothic-style Church of St. Peter sits atop a rocky headland. Nearby is the centuries-old Castello Doria, an imposing clifftop fortress with views of the Gulf of Poets.
Hiking Views: The ‘Tell Trail’ In Switzerland (4K)
The new long-distance path Tell-Trail wends its way across the scenic Lucerne-Lake Lucerne region – from Altdorf up to the Brienzer Rothorn. In eight stages, the trail passes by glittering mountain lakes, through historic villages and world-renowned towns, and takes in the “Big 6” mountains of central Switzerland: Fronalpstock (Stoos), Rigi, Pilatus, Stanserhorn, Titlis and Brienzer Rothorn. The varied flora and fauna and the spectacular mountain landscape are constant features of the itinerary. Stage 5, from Stans to Engelberg, is particularly impressive.
If the good William Tell had had more time, he would have chosen this route through Central Switzerland. The Tell Trail leads you on spectacular high-altitude paths, into small side valleys and along dreamy rippling rivers. You will discover the most famous vantage points and the most beautiful places in Central Switzerland.
You hike in a wide arc from the Tell monument in Altdorf to the Muotathal, storm Stoos, Rigi and Mount Pilatus and finish the tour after a visit to Engelberg and Melchsee-Frutt on the Brienzer Rothorn. The hikes are demanding and the views are dazzling: If it weren’t for the landvogt Gessler, Wilhelm and Walter would have loved to take on this tour.
