Views: Green Energy On Scotland’s Isle Of Eigg

The community living on the Scottish Isle of Eigg were the first in the world to set up their own off-grid energy system powered by wind, water and the Sun. The tiny island has shown it’s possible to rely almost entirely on renewables. Since it was launched in 2008, they have received visitors from several other countries wanting to learn more about the project. Community Energy Malawi, who help to set up renewable energy systems across Malawi, used their experience to set up a solar minigrid in Sitolo village, a community that previously relied on fossil fuels and firewood.

There is gold on Indonesia’s Sangihe island, and a Canadian-listed mining company has a permit to exploit it. Environmentalists say the gold mine threatens the island’s ancient forests, which are home to endemic birds. Locals fear it will affect their water supply. The BBC visited the remote island to see what’s at stake.

Wildlife: Saving ‘Numbats’ In Australia (BBC Video)

The numbat – a small and little-known Australian marsupial – is one of the world’s most endangered animals. Conservationists are working hard to save them by building vast, predator-free sanctuaries.

The numbat is an insectivorous marsupial. It is diurnal and its diet consists almost exclusively of termites. It was once widespread across southern Australia, but is now restricted to several small colonies in Western Australia. It is therefore considered an endangered species and protected by conservation programs.
