Seaside Italian Villa Tour: ‘Art Nouveau’ In Liguria

Lionard Luxury Real Estate (August 4, 2023) – A tour of a stunning sea-facing villa, an example of Art-Nouveau architecture, with private paths that lead down to the sea.

Located just thirty km from Genoa, this house was built on the beach front, at the foot of an enchanting village on the western Ligurian Riviera. Immersed in a centuries-old park measuring 4.5 hectares, among the intoxicating scents of lush lavender hedges, this villa stands out for anyone looking from the sea towards the thick Mediterranean scrub that covers the hinterland.

In the center, in a magnificent panoramic position directly overlooking the sea, this 2,000-sqm villa stands fascinating and majestic, developed on three floors. Its beauty, protected by the Cultural and Landscape Heritage, is given by the large reception hall that occupies the ground floor, with original terrazzo floors and ceilings with stuccoes and embossed decorations, around which there are four rooms, two on each side, as well as a study and four bathrooms.

On one side of the floor, there is a 180-sqm terrace featuring precious marble floorings – the ideal setting for a sumptuous reception – covered by a fixed structure that can be closed on the sides.

Japan Culture: “100 Wabi-Sabi Gardens” In Kyoto

Yurara Sarara Films (July 16, 2023) – Wabi sabi can be defined as “beauty in imperfection” and can incorporate asymmetry, incompleteness, impermanence, and simplicity.

In addition to gardens, wabi sabi influences many other aspects of Japanese art and culture, such as the tea ceremony and pottery making, and it is also seen as a way of life.

A garden based around wabi sabi incorporates natural and manmade elements in a way that allows visitors to appreciate their humble and imperfect forms. This typically involves using not only plants but also stones and weathered manmade objects as design elements.

Tours: Brooklyn Botanic Garden Bonsai Museum

Eastern Leaf Films (June 12, 2023) – A walking tour of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s Bonsai Museum. The museum is curated by David Castro, who does an amazing job of caring for the trees and their presentation.

Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s world-class bonsai collection is displayed in the C.V. Starr Bonsai Museum. Some of the trees are well over a century old, with many still cultivated in their original containers.

The display changes with the seasons, and as many as 30 specimens are on exhibit at any given time. More than 400 temperate and tropical bonsai trained in classic modes such as the windswept, slanted trunk, rock clinging, and forest styles are included in the collection, one of the largest on display outside Japan.

Watercolor Views: British Painter Annie Tempest’s “Mediterranean Cruise”

Country Life Magazine (June 10 , 2023) – Annie Tempest, the brains and hands behind Country Life’s beloved Tottering-by-Gently cartoon, shares her pictorial diary of a recent Empires of the Mediterranean cruise, aboard Viking’s ‘Sky’ ship, with us.

Piraeus 1.0  – We boarded Viking Sky at Piraeus port in Athens, so were in harbour over night. I began to notice the blueness and the ‘dome-i-ness’ of my surroundings. Acclimatising my eyes to the change in architecture from North Norfolk.

Still painting late into the night watching the the buildings turn into silhouettes and the blue mountains in the distance fade to smudges.

Koper, Slovenia – Tito Square in Koper has a strong Italian influence and even the language spoken here is part Italian and part Slovene. It was a capital city under the Venetian Republic. I couldn’t paint this journey without including a tourist photographing the magnificent architecture.

This was the sight that greeted us as we  approached the Greek island of Santorini. Beautiful coloured buildings above what looked like cave entrances. The town sits on the top of what appears to be a giant rock and is reached by cable car, or donkey for the more intrepid.

English Country Homes: ‘Compton End’, Hampshire

Country Life Magazine (June 8, 2023) – Originally built in the 17th century, Compton End in the village of Compton caught the eye of the architect George Herbert Kitchin, who extended the house in the late 19th century and created the magnificent Arts-and-Crafts garden. He lived at the property until his death in 1951.

The gardens are marked by a combination of formality and informality. Clipped yew hedges and topiary contrast with abundant naturalistic planting. Vistas lead through rectangular areas with straight paths and borders, a pond, and then a croquet lawn, to fields and woods beyond. Less formal areas have winding pathways and there are also wildflower meadows and fruit trees. The rendered brick summer house has fine views from all sides. Next to the house is a recently rebuilt timber framed barn for use as a garage and workshop. There is ample parking on the gravel drive.

Winchester is a city in the county of Hampshire, on the edge of England’s South Downs National Park. It’s known for medieval Winchester Cathedral, with its 17th-century Morley Library, the Winchester Bible and a Norman crypt. Nearby are the ruins of Wolvesey Castle and the Winchester City Mill, a working 18th-century corn mill. The Great Hall of Winchester Castle houses the medieval round table linked to King Arthur.
