Suzanne Jackson, whose work a history drawing-cracked wall (2016–19) features on the cover of the Fall 2023 issue of Art in America in a detail of the larger work shown here in full, told A.i.A. the backstory of her creation from her home in Savannah, Georgia. (Jackson is also the subject of a feature profile in the same issue.)

As told to A.i.A. The “history” in history drawing is the history of making the drawing. Over the three years I was working on it—it’s a big drawing—the whole process just happens from day to day: you’re adding something new, building it, working through composition and how elements come into the spaces in different ways. Each time you come back to work on it, something new has happened in your life.

Dominic Besner’s creative work is based on a mixed technique on canvas. He has a preference for oil sticks and their rich palette of colours as well as acrylic paint, structural mortar, china marker and aerosol paint. In addition to these materials, he uses a technique of application by the fingers and scraping of the canvas.

Philip Mould & Co Films (June 2, 2023) – Starting off at Charleston House, where Stephen Tomlin’s friends, lovers, and sitters came together, this exhibition film traces Tomlin’s life and career, revealing the stories behind the artworks on display in ‘Bloomsbury Stud: The Art of Stephen Tomlin’, on view at the Philip Mould Gallery from 5th June until 11th August 2023.

Stephen Tomlin, the Bloomsbury group’s primary sculptor, immortalised the faces of Bloomsbury’s best-known characters, including Duncan Grant, Lytton Strachey and Virginia Woolf. With inexhaustible charisma, disarming good looks and undeniable talent, Tomlin captivated his contemporaries, and references to Stephen ‘Tommy’ Tomlin pepper countless biographies of 20th century figures.

However, until recently, that was where his story remained. Now, this exhibition aims to return Tomlin to the artistic spotlight where he belongs.

Beginning 1 June, Hauser & Wirth Hong Kong presents ‘The Sea Remembers,’ Otero’s first solo exhibition in Asia since he joined the gallery in 2022. Through a labor-intensive process of laying down, scrapping and collaging oil paint, Angel Otero’s works are rooted in abstract image making and engage with the idea of memory through addressing art history, as well as his own lived experience.

frevonyc presents ‘Altered Lands’, the first show by British artist Jake Wood-Evans on US soil, an exhibition curated by one of Europe’s most exciting independent galleries, Unit London.

Jake Wood-Evans presents a conscious shift from figure towards landscape. With Altered Lands Wood-Evans explores references from eighteenth and nineteenth-century English artists, examining how these artworks communicate notions of transience, nostalgia, and intangibility through a contemporary lens.

With a focus on John Constable, Benjamin Williams Leader, and the overlooked landscape works of Gainsborough, Wood-Evans continues to unravel the thread that weaves through his entire practice, using the familiar as a tool to uncover something new.

Unit London is one of London’s leading independent, artist-led galleries. It was founded in 2013 by two young British artists, Joe Kennedy, and Jonny Burt. They had a vision of creating a gallery that champions and supports the world’s most gifted emerging artists in a manner that is open, inclusive, and accessible.

Anselm Kiefer: hortus conclusus, Hong Kong, May 17–August 5, 2023 | Gagosian

Kiefer’s thirteenth solo exhibition at Gagosian since 1998, hortus conclusus follows Questi scritti, quando verranno bruciati, daranno finalmente un po’ di luce (Andrea Emo) at Palazzo Ducale, Venice (2022–23) and Exodus, a bicoastal exhibition presented at the gallery in New York (2022) and at Gagosian at the Marciano Art Foundation, Los Angeles (2022–23).

This coming October, Lille Métropole Musée d’art moderne, d’art contemporain et d’art brut (LaM) in France will present Anselm Kiefer: Photography at the Beginning, the first exhibition dedicated to the artist’s photographs.
