Views: The Horseback Fisherwomen Of Belgium

The tradition of horseback fishing for fish and shrimp goes back to the 16th century. Large Belgian Draft horses trawl across the beach with fishing nets attached to their saddles. In Oostduinkerke, at the Belgian coast, this 500-year-old shrimping tradition has remained unchanged, except in 2015, when a small but significant change occurred: for the first time ever, 2 women joined the ranks of what was long considered a “man’s job”. We met up with the women who brave the waves on Belgians weighing up to 1 ton every day.

Spring Break Ocean Walk: Destin Beach, Florida (4K)

Destin is a city in northwest Florida, in the area known as the Panhandle. It’s known for its Gulf of Mexico beaches and many golf courses, as well as the Destin Harbor Boardwalk. Nature trails pass through the dunes of Henderson Beach State Park in the south, where the coastline is dotted with pine and oak trees sheltering wildlife. To the west are the tall slides, waterfalls and pools of Big Kahuna’s water park.

The makers of the Bafta-winning documentary My Octopus Teacher want to preserve the underwater ecosystem it features. The documentary focuses on a film-maker who befriends an octopus – but the unsung star of the show is the kelp forest off the coast of Cape Town. It is one of the richest ecosystems in the world. The makers of the film are part of a campaign to preserve the aquatic forest.

Ocean Walks: ‘Siesta Key Beach – Florida’ (4K Video)

Siesta Beach is a beach located on Siesta Key in the U.S. state of Florida. Unlike beaches elsewhere that are made up mostly of pulverized coral, Siesta Beach’s sand is 99% quartz, most of which comes from the Appalachian Mountains.
