From the banks of the Seine to Montmartre, DW reporter Swati Bakshi takes you to places in the French capital where you can observe the city’s transition to sustainability.
The Place des Abbesses is located within the Montmartre area of Paris where it is home to an original art nouveau metro entrance, plus the Square Jehan-Rictus with the I Love You wall and the Paroisse Saint Jean church that was constructed in a revolutionary style at the time. There was once a Benedictine convent in this area of Paris that was built on the site of the martyrdom of Saint Denis, which was a popular place for pilgrimages until it was destroyed during the French Revolution, and this is where the Place des Abbesses gets in name from. The Place des Abbesses is a typical square that has a traditional feel, yet is now a popular place for shopping with some old shops and chic boutiques close by, along with numerous restaurants for that all important experience of eating out in Paris. Alternatively, you could just enjoy a coffee at one of the many cafes in Paris that are also situated around this square.
Situated in the very heart of Montmartre, one of the most famous squares of all of Paris is that of Place du Tertre, which is world-famous for its painters, cafés, and ambiance.
The area known as Montmartre is located in the 18th arrondissement or district of Paris, due north of the Louvre. It can be easily reached by metro, stations Abbesses (line 12), Pigalle (lines 2 and 12) or Anvers (line 2). The classic way to get up to the top of the hill of Montmartre, known in French as La Butte Montmartre, is from the Anvers metro station. From here walk up the Rue Steinkerque until you reach the gardens at the end. From here you can either take the funicular railway up to the top, or walk up more than 250 steps to the basilica at the top. The exact number of steps depends on the path you take.

The historic district established by the City of Paris in 1995 is bordered by rue Caulaincourt and rue Custine on the north, rue de Clignancourt on the east, and boulevard de Clichy and boulevard de Rochechouart to the south,[4] containing 60 ha (150 acres).[5] Montmartre is primarily known for its artistic history, the white-domed Basilica of the Sacré-Cœur on its summit, and as a nightclub district. The other church on the hill, Saint Pierre de Montmartre, built in 1147, was the church of the prestigious Montmartre Abbey. On August 15, 1534, Saint Ignatius of Loyola, Saint Francis Xavier and five other companions bound themselves by vows in the Martyrium of Saint Denis, 11 rue Yvonne Le Tac, the first step in the creation of the Jesuits.[6]

Walking around the picturesque area today, there’s little trace of the chaotic and deadly scenes that played out here just 150 years ago: a brutal civil war that came hot on the heels of a deadly Prussian siege. We look back at the Paris Commune and explore its legacy today. We also hear from historian Ludivine Bantigny.
The Paris Commune was a revolutionary socialist government that controlled Paris from 18 March to 28 May 1871. During the events of the Franco-Prussian War, Paris had been defended by the National Guard, where working class radicalism grew among soldiers.
Vincent Van Gogh created many wonderful works during his time in Paris, not least some stunning paintings featuring the moulins of Montmartre.
