Weather: ‘Vorticity 5’ – A Storm Time-Lapse Film

Mike Olbinski Films (August 8, 2023) – Vorticity 5 took two years to film. Tens of thousands of miles across the central United States, from Montana to the Texas/Mexico border. A few hundred thousand shutter clicks. Loads of McDonalds, Subway and Allsups.

The most epic, cheap motels. And countless, stunning storms. This is the first time for any movie of mine where I have tornadoes AND haboobs make appearances. The haboob (dust storm) happened in May of 2022 in southwest Kansas. It was amazing and unexpected. Of all the clips that make up this film, I’m the most proud of that one.

It was like my world of chasing in Arizona finally collided with the universe of supercells and tornadoes on the plains. I hope you enjoy this film. The colors, the storms, the lightning, the twisters and the dust. It’s everything I love, everything I am continually awestruck by no matter how long I do this.

Aerial City Views: Wichita In Central Kansas (4K)

Wichitacity, seat (1870) of Sedgwick county, south-central Kansas, U.S. It lies on the Arkansas River near the mouth of the Little Arkansas, about 140 miles (225 km) southwest of Topeka. The city site is a gently rolling plain at an elevation of about 1,300 feet (400 metres). Summers are hot and winters cool; precipitation is moderate and falls mainly during the warm months.

Wichita, the largest city in the state, is at the heart of a three-county metropolitan area. Nearby communities include Park City (north), Andover (east), and Derby and Haysville (south). Inc. city, 1871. Area city, 139 square miles (360 square km). Pop. (2010) 382,368; Wichita Metro Area, 623,061; (2020) 397,532...

Wichita was founded in 1864 as a trading post on the site of a village of the Wichita Indians. It owed its early development to the  Texas cattle  trade along the Chisholm Trail and to the rapid spread of agricultural settlement along the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, then under construction. In its early years Wichita was a stopover on cattle drives to Abilene (Kansas) and other points as the railroad moved west; in 1872 the line reached Wichita, and the city became a major cattle-shipping centre. By 1875 farmers’ fences were obstructing the movement of beef herds, but grain became an important commodity.

Prairie View: ‘Spring Creek Ranch’ – Eureka, Kansas

The Spring Creek Ranch, owned by the same family for nearly 80 years, is now being offered for sale. Comprised of 10,793± acres of deeded land with predominantly native tallgrasses in the heart of the widely known Kansas Flint Hills, this ranch is a combination cow/calf and stocker cattle operation that was designed to operate at a very efficient level. Beautiful Spring Creek runs through the ranch for over seven miles, providing numerous areas of fertile cropland, hay meadows, and stands of hardwood trees in and around the rock-bottom creek with pools of fresh, clear water.
