Timelapse Travel: ‘Tiempo’ – Barcelona, Spain (Video)

Filmed and Edited by: Jordi de Temple

Barcelona, the cosmopolitan capital of Spain’s Catalonia region, is known for its art and architecture. The fantastical Sagrada Família church and other modernist landmarks designed by Antoni Gaudí dot the city. Museu Picasso and Fundació Joan Miró feature modern art by their namesakes. City history museum MUHBA, includes several Roman archaeological sites.

More than 6 years have passed since I published “Into the Night”. Since then I have had the opportunity to capture hundreds of landscapes, both urban and natural, using the timelapse technique.

With “Temps” I wanted to show some of these urban landscapes of the city of Barcelona, to represent through images, the passage of time and the ephemeral and fragile of human life.

Timelapse Travel: ‘Nippon 12k’ – Discovering Japan

This is a timelapse film that depicts various parts of Japan in 12K (11520×6480 resolution). In order to achieve 12K resolution, we used various shooting methods, new workflows, and a lot of trial and error, and it took a long time to produce the film.

But even more than that, the COVID-19 made timelapse photography extremely difficult. 8K is the highest resolution, but the so-called “oversampling effect” made I feel that 12K images can be expressed in higher resolution. Although 12K is not yet an official standard, we will continue to work on further visualization as a new visual expression.

Winter Travel: Frosted Landscape, Arctic Norway

As the Sun disappears for several weeks in November and never to show up again before January, Arctic Norway prepares for the long polar nights. With them, the dramatic landscapes take on a very magical appearance as the arrival of cold and humid conditions clothes everything with ice crystals.

It seems, however, that the episodes of frost are becoming less and less numerous due to climate change and the strengthening of the Gulf stream bringing relentless mild temperatures, which in turn melt away the snow and the frost. This year has been particularly mild, but here and there, we were treated to a fleeting coat of sparkly white ice. Between pastel colors of fiery sunsets, the dance of the famous aurora borealis to glow from the night sky, the ice crystal shine and behave in a different way.

The main focus of this short film was obviously the recording of frost throughout the various landscape of northern Norway (Troms region). Unfortunately, the frost hasn’t been strong enough to show fully grown crystals, so the main interest was the thin layer of ice enveloping grass, twigs, branches, rocks, but also the small lakes beginning to freeze over. The out of focus / medium format macro techniques were used a lot in the film to amplify the diffraction of moonlight into ice crystals and reveal their twinkling. Camera motion along ramps also participated in getting this effect. Shooting macro at night is far from being the simplest, as lots of light is required to compensate for the very narrow aperture used to gain depth of field. Some sequences were shot at f/9-14 so moonlight was indispensable.

I hope you will enjoy this compilation of timelapse sequences, which are also available for licensing upon request (nightlightsfilms@gmail.com)

All was shot with the Sony a7s, a7rII and 2 Canon 6D astromodified, a variety of bright lenses ranging from 14mm to 50mm. For motion control I used the Syrp 3-axis Genie I system and also the Vixen Polarie. All post production was made in Lr with the special timelapse plus plugin, Sequence for mac, TLDF, and final production was made in FCPX. I hope you like the movie as much as I liked shooting and processing it and I thank everyone of you for your support. New Timelapse Travel Video: ‘Paris – France’

The ‘culture of Paris concerns the arts, music, museums, festivals and other entertainment in Paris, the capital city of France. The city is today one of the world’s leading business and cultural centers; entertainment, music, media, fashion, and the arts all contribute to its status as one of the world’s major global cities.

Paris is also home to notable cultural attractions such as the LouvreMusée PicassoMusée RodinMusée du Montparnasse, and Musée National d’Art Moderne. The Musée d’Orsay and Musée de l’Orangerie are notable for housing Impressionist era masterpieces, while art and artifacts from the Middle Ages can be seen in Musée Cluny.

A variety of landmarks and objects are cultural icons associated with Paris, such as Eiffel TowerNotre Dame de Paris and Opéra Garnier. Many of Paris’ once-popular local establishments have come to cater to the tastes and expectations of tourists, rather than local patrons. Le Lido, the cabaret-dance hall, for example, is a staged dinner theater spectacle, a dance display that was once but one aspect of the cabaret’s former atmosphere. All of the establishment’s former social or cultural elements, such as its ballrooms and gardens, are gone today. Much of Paris’ hotel, restaurant, and night entertainment trades have become heavily dependent on tourism.
