Grand Canal, Italian Canale Grande, main waterway of Venice, Italy, following a natural channel that traces a reverse-S course from San Marco Basilica to Santa Chiara Church and divides the city into two parts.
Slightly more than 3 km (2 miles) long and between 30 and 70 metres (100 and 225 feet) wide, the Grand Canal has an average depth of 5 metres (17 feet) and connects at various points with a maze of smaller canals. These waterways carry the bulk of Venetian transportation, as automobiles are banned throughout much of the city. Traditional poled gondolas are a favourite with tourists but are now vastly outnumbered by motorized public-transit water buses (vaporetti) and private water taxis. Siren-equipped boats belonging to the police, fire, and emergency medical services traverse the Grand Canal at high speed, and barges are responsible for the delivery of goods throughout the city. The connection between Venetians and their city’s main thoroughfare does not end at the grave: funeral barges can be seen transporting the dead to Isola di San Michele, an island northeast of the city that has been the site of Venice’s largest cemetery since the early 19th century.

Village Walks: Villalago – Central Italy (4K Video)
Villalago, located 25 km south of Sulmona, in the Abruzzo region of L’Aquila, arose in the 11th century for Christian and Benedictine inspiration, finding in San Domenico Abate the founder of the monastery of San Pietro il Lago, in the upper Sagittario valley. At its foundation the monastery was endowed by the Lords of those lands, the counts of Valva, with goods and privileges and attracted settlers from all over, who settled, under the monks, in several villas in the Valle de Lacu, so called for the its five lakes. Over time, to ensure a valid defense, they perched on Mount Argoneta, where some Lombard towers already stood, and the new village took the name of Villalago. In 1479 the monastery was abandoned by the Benedictines and the Villalaghesi “no longer colonists, they became a body of the University, with independent possessions” (Antinori, chorography of Villalago). And under the motto of “Universitas contra omnes”, they fought victoriously against the Belprato Counts of Antwerp and against others who aimed to take over the entire Valle de Lacu.

Walking Tour: Vernazza – Cinque Terre, Italy (4K)
Vernazza is one of the 5 centuries-old villages that make up the Cinque Terre, on northwest Italy’s rugged Ligurian coast. Colorful houses surround its small marina. The Santa Margherita di Antiochia Church has a bell tower topped by an elegant cupola. Clinging to the rocks, Doria Castle is a medieval defensive structure with a cylindrical tower. In front of its facade, designed by Bernini (while the side facade is instead by Francesco Borromini), stands the column of the Immaculate Conception, which was raised after the proclamation of the dogma by the will of King Ferdinand II of the Two Sicilies in thanks for one escaped attack, and inaugurated on December 8, 1857.The monumental staircase of 135 steps, commissioned by Cardinal Pierre Guérin de Tencin, was inaugurated by Pope Benedict XIII on the occasion of the Jubilee of 1725: it was built, thanks to French funding starting from 1721, to connect the embassy of the Bourbons of Spain, to which the square owes its name, to the church of the Trinità dei Monti.It was designed by both Alessandro Specchi and Francesco De Sanctis after generations of long and heated discussions on how the steep slope on the side of the Pincio should be urbanized to connect it to the church. The solution chosen was that of De Sanctis: a large staircase decorated with numerous garden terraces, which in spring and summer is beautifully decorated with many flowers. The sumptuous, aristocratic staircase, located at the apex of a long road axis that led to the Tiber, was designed so that the scenic effects gradually increased as you approached. Typical of the great Baroque architecture was in fact the creation of long, deep perspectives culminating with scenes or backgrounds of a monumental nature. The church of the Santissima Trinità dei Monti is one of the 5 French-speaking Catholic churches of Rome, together with San Luigi dei Francesi, San Nicola dei Lorenesi, Sant’Ivo dei Bretoni and Santi Claudio e Andrea dei Borgognoni.
