Top Hikes In California: Malibu Creek State Park Features M*A*S*H & South Pacific Film Set Locations

From a Curbed Los Angeles online article:

Malibu Creek State Park photo by Tanja EbnerHikes in Malibu Creek State Park have Hollywood connections, as the park includes areas that were used to shoot M*A*S*H and South Pacific. Though the area was hit by the Woolsey fire, there are still some (scorched) rusted Army Jeeps and other signs of filming here, making for a nice photo op.

Because of the fire, the park was briefly closed, but it reopened earlier this month. (The campground remains closed, according to the park’s official website, due to an ongoing investigation by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.) Since the landscape is recovering from a devastating wildfire, do take extra care to stay on the existing trails.

Road Trip: Peak’s Island, ME Is Kayaker’s Paradise, “Wild & Rocky Coastline” Two Hours From Boston

From a Boston Magazine article:

Peak’s Island, ME PHOTO BY TRENT BELLDifferent Strokes | If the idea of wearing a tank top seems profoundly depressing, skip the sports club in favor of an upper-body workout that’ll replace the reflection in the gym mirror with a view of Maine’s wild and rocky coast. And thankfully, there’s little exertion in getting there. Drive up Friday night; stay at Portland’s Regency Hotel (two hours from Boston); then catch the nearby ferry at 9:15 a.m. to Peaks Island, where the affable staff of Maine Island Kayak Company will escort you to a kayaker’s paradise. After an introductory paddling course, a primer on the vagaries of ocean weather, and some disclaimers, you’re ready to slide into a single-person sea kayak and head for open water.

Travel Technology: “HipCamp” Website Offers More Than 300,000 Campsites Nearest You

From

By the numbers, Hipcamp is impressive. With more than 300,000 sites available, it claims to be the largest resource of its kind in the United States. That number includes public park campsites and private campgrounds, making it easy to zero in on the site that fits your needs. Most impressive are the niche options available for specific types of camping. Hipcamp curates lists for lake camping, beach camping, pet-friendly campsites, and glamping (glamour camping) options. Like Airbnb, many of Hipcamp’s sites are unique and destination-worthy in their own right like this off-grid tiny cabin in Oregon, California’s The Sanctuary Treehouse, and this rustic campsite on a vineyard in Minnesota.

Boomers Travel: “Life House Hotels” Converts Historic Buildings Into Lifestyle Destinations

From a Hotel Management online article:

Life House - Little Havana in MiamiBy next year, Zeidan expects Life House to have more than 20 hotels open or under construction across the country, with new developments in Brooklyn, N.Y.; Denver, Colo.; and Lake Tahoe, Nev. “Ninety percent of our hotels are historic buildings that we convert and re-imagine into lifestyle products,” he told HM. In developing each property, the company’s creative team examines both the logistics of the asset and the narrative of the building and its location. “Historic buildings have a tremendous amount of stories and inspiration to draw from,” said the executive.

Life House opened its first hotel late last year in Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood and will have five more hotels in the city by the end of 2019, as well as a further five beyond Miami. In total, Life House has signed more than 500 rooms across nearly 10 projects so far, spending less than $5 million of venture capital and positioning the company to raise a Series B round of funding this summer.

Zeidan’s asset-light growth plans for Life House are focused on markets with high hotel prices and where home-sharing services are highly regulated. Miami’s Airbnb regulations and seasonality made a boutique brand a good fit, he said, and the high prices on hotels in Nantucket made that city optimal for a lifestyle brand. “And there’s an under-supply of hotel inventory there,” he added.

Top New Travel Products: “The Layover” Travel Blanket Is Perfect For Flights, “Super Packable”

From YankoDesign.com article:

Layover Travel Blanket PackabilityDesigned with the soul of a sleeping bag, the Layover is a blanket explicitly built for traveling with. Its construction beats those flimsy, tiny, smelly blankets they hand out on flights, and gives you a full-body comforter that wraps you in its cocoon-esque design. Crafted with a breathable nylon exterior and an insulated interior, the Layover is cozy and can keep you warm in those often-chilly flights. Unlike traditional flat, rectangular blankets, Layover’s design comes with pockets and pouches for your hands, legs, and even a few key belongings (like your passport or boarding pass), giving you an experience comparable to being a baby kangaroo in its pouch. The Layover fits your body like a glove, keeping you absolutely snug and ensuring that the blanket doesn’t come off when you move or turn in your sleep. Pair it with a good eye mask and neck pillow and you’ve got yourself the holy trinity of effective transit-napping.

Top RV Campgrounds: Indian Dunes National Park Offers Challenging Hikes, Abundant Campsites

From a New York Times article by Henry Alford:

Indiana Dunes National Park map NY TimesThe volunteer encouraged me to take the 3 Dune Challenge, a 1.5-mile hike up Indiana Dunes’ three highest dunes (Mount Tom, 192 feet; Mount Holden, 184 feet; Mount Jackson, 176 feet), adding that completion of the Challenge would yield a “special reward.”

Back at my well-shaded and firepit-equipped campsite, I surveilled the campground’s 146 other sites. The R.V.-to-tent ratio was about ten to one. My thumbnail sociological findings: The people in R.V.s tended to have a baseball cap and a spouse, while the people in tents tended to have a beard and a slightly unsettling stare. I also took note of the 20-mile-per-hour winds that would be present throughout my stay: These made for cool nights and for campfires that were ridiculously easy to get going.

Top RV Campsites: Piñon Flats Campground In Great Sand Dunes National Park, CO

From Fodors.com online:

Piñon Flats Campground“After a day sledding down the largest sand dunes in North America, Piñon Flats, a decidedly un-sandy campground protected by the shade of cottonwood and conifer, is where you want to be. The Great Sand Dunes National Park’s April-October seasonal campground has 88 individual sites and 15 group sites, all of which are framed by views of the dunes and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in the distance. All campsites require reservations and come complete with fire pits and picnic tables. Each loop of the campground has restrooms with flush toilets and potable water.”

Top RV Campsites: Fruita Campground In Capitol Reef National Park, Utah

Capitol Reef National Park“Capitol Reef National Park is known for its cliffs and canyons of red rock, which makes Fruita Campground something of an anomaly. Fed by the Fremont River, which rolls along the campground’s edge, Fruita is literally an oasis in the desert, surrounded by the cool, green shade of historic orchards. During the peak season, most of the 64-tent/RV sites and seven walk-in sites, complete with flushing toilets, running water, and fire pits or grills, can be reserved; during off-season they switch to a first-come first-serve system.”
