Alpine Drives: Gotthard Pass, Switzerland (4K)

The Gotthard Pass or St. Gotthard Pass at 2,106 m is a mountain pass in the Alps traversing the Saint-Gotthard Massif and connecting northern and southern Switzerland.

The pass lies between Airolo in the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino, and Andermatt in the German-speaking canton of Uri, and connects further Bellinzona to Lucerne, Basel, and Zurich. The Gotthard Pass lies at the hearth of the Gotthard, an important north-south axis in Europe, and it is crossed by three major traffic tunnels, each being the world’s longest at the time of their construction: the Gotthard Rail Tunnel (1882), the Gotthard Road Tunnel (1980) and the Gotthard Base Tunnel (2016). With the Lötschberg to the west, the Gotthard is one of the two main north-south routes through the Swiss Alps. Since the Middle Ages, transit across the Gotthard played an important role in Swiss history, the region north of Gotthard becoming the nucleus of the Swiss Confederacy in the early 14th century.

With its stunning view of Lake Geneva, the Beau-Rivage, in Geneva has attracted actors from Roger Moore to Angelina Jolie, and played host to political luminaries like Kofi Annan, Charles de Gaulle and the Dalai Lama. Political history has been made here, too: In 1898, the Empress “Sisi” of Austria was stabbed to death by an anarchist at the Beau-Rivage. Nearly a hundred years later, in 1987, the German politician Uwe Barschel was discovered dead here, in a bathtub. Family-run for generations, the hotel is impressive not just for its size, but also for its discretion. Now, director Jacques Mayer uses interviews, archival film and rarely seen photographs to vividly chronicle some of the most fateful years of the Beau-Rivage.

Susten Pass (el. 2260 m.) is a mountain pass in the Swiss Alps. The pass road, built from 1938–1945, connects Innertkirchen in the canton of Bern with Wassen in the canton of Uri. A 300-metre long tunnel crosses the pass at 2,224 metres. The pass is popular with tourists, especially for the views of the Stein Glacier on the south side.

The new long-distance path Tell-Trail wends its way across the scenic Lucerne-Lake Lucerne region – from Altdorf up to the Brienzer Rothorn. In eight stages, the trail passes by glittering mountain lakes, through historic villages and world-renowned towns, and takes in the “Big 6” mountains of central Switzerland: Fronalpstock (Stoos), Rigi, Pilatus, Stanserhorn, Titlis and Brienzer Rothorn. The varied flora and fauna and the spectacular mountain landscape are constant features of the itinerary. Stage 5, from Stans to Engelberg, is particularly impressive.

If the good William Tell had had more time, he would have chosen this route through Central Switzerland. The Tell Trail leads you on spectacular high-altitude paths, into small side valleys and along dreamy rippling rivers. You will discover the most famous vantage points and the most beautiful places in Central Switzerland.

You hike in a wide arc from the Tell monument in Altdorf to the Muotathal, storm Stoos, Rigi and Mount Pilatus and finish the tour after a visit to Engelberg and Melchsee-Frutt on the Brienzer Rothorn. The hikes are demanding and the views are dazzling: If it weren’t for the landvogt Gessler, Wilhelm and Walter would have loved to take on this tour.

Alpine Walk: Kandersteg – Switzerland (4K Video)

Kandersteg is a high-altitude resort village in the Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland. Trails, like the challenging Allmenalp, and a cable car head east to Lake Oeschinen. Set at the foot of the Blüemlisalp massif, the lake is also a popular ski area, as is Sunnbüel to the southwest. In the forested Blausee Nature Park to the north, Blausee is a small, trout-filled lake fed by subterranean springs.
