Szeged, city with county status and seat of Csongrád megye (county), southeastern Hungary. It lies on the Tisza River, west (downstream) of its confluence with the Maros and a few miles from the intersection of Hungary, Romania, and Serbia.
Szeged was a military stronghold and trade centre in the time of the Árpád kings (10th–15th century) and was sacked by the Tatars and the Turks. Flourishing as a centre of commerce, it was one of Hungary’s largest cities in the early 16th century, though it suffered under Turkish rule in the late 16th century and under Austrian rule from the late 17th century.
The Neuer Markt (New Market), one of the oldest squares in Vienna, is located west of the Karntner street (Kärntner Straße). During the Second World War, the square was heavily damaged. Many buildings were lost and replaced by modern ones.
The most famous building on the Neuer Markt is the Capuchin Church (Kapuzinerkirche). Below it is the resting place of the Habsburgs in the Capuchin Crypt. Nearby you’ll find the Ambassador Hotel and the house built for the Gebrüder Wild, a former traditional delicacy shop built in the style of the German Renaissance with a facade of the “Old German period”. Also check out the Mayseder house, one of the oldest houses on the square, and the premises of the traditional jeweler AE Köchert.

Athens lies 5 miles (8 km) from the Bay of Phaleron, an inlet of the Aegean (Aigaíon) Sea where Piraeus (Piraiévs), the port of Athens, is situated, in a mountain-girt arid basin divided north-south by a line of hills. Greater Athens has an area of 165 square miles (427 square km). The Kifisós River, only a trickle in summer, flows through the western half; the Ilisós River, often dry, traverses the eastern half. The surrounding mountains—Párnis, 4,636 feet (1,413 metres); Pentelicus (Pendéli), 3,631 feet; Hymettos (Imittós), 3,365 feet; and Aigáleon, 1,535 feet—add to the impression of barrenness. Yet such considerations are superficial when compared with the fecundity of Athens’s bequests to the world, such as its philosophy, its architecture, its literature, and its political ideals.

Cutting through the very heart of the Paris, the Seine River is the epicenter of the vibrant French capital. The gentle waterway is an integral part of the city and its fascinating history. Lofoten, island group, in the Norwegian Sea, northern Norway. Lying off the mainland entirely within the Arctic Circle, the group comprises the southern end of the Lofoten-Vesterålen archipelago and includes five main islands (Austvågøya, Gimsøya, Vestvågøya, Flakstadøya, and Moskenesøya) extending about 70 miles (110 km) from north to south. In addition, there are many small islands and skerries (rocky islets and reefs). The total length of the archipelago is about 110 miles (175 km).
A broad and deep fjord, the Vesterålsfjorden, lies between Lofoten and the mainland. The islands, composed of volcanic rocks (gneiss and granite), are the highly eroded tops of a partially submerged mountain range. The highest peak is Higravtinden (3,760 feet [1,146 metres]) on Austvågøya. North of the Arctic Circle, the islands are washed by the warm North Atlantic Current, which tempers their climate.
