Chianti Classico territory’s capitals are Siena and Florence and it is shared between the provinces of the two municipalities. The zone amounts to 71,800 hectares (177,500 acres) and includes the entire territories of the municipalities of Castellina in Chianti, Gaiole in Chianti, Greve in Chianti and Radda in Chianti and parts of those of Barberino Tavarnelle, Castelnuovo Berardenga, Poggibonsi, San Casciano Val di Pesa.
Its location bang in the middle of Paris, with Châtelet to the north and Saint-Germain-des-Prés to the south, makes it the central crossroads of the city, which grew outwards from here. When you’ve finished visiting all the sights, take one last admiring look at the magnificent facade of Notre Dame, then stroll along the banks of the Seine and stop to watch improvised concerts by wandering musicians, for whom this area is a prime performance venue.
Ile de la Cité is also the perfect place for a riverside picnic. At night, the bridges are beautifully lit, and there is a feeling of midsummer magic.
Nearby, the glacial waters of Trümmelbach Falls gush through mountain crevices past viewing platforms. A cable car runs from Stechelberg village to Schilthorn mountain, for views over the Bernese Alps.
Chelsea is an affluent area known for the smart boutiques & high-end restaurants lining busy King’s Road. The National Army Museum traces British army history from the 1600s to the present, while the Saatchi Gallery displays contemporary art in the Duke of York’s headquarters. The red-coated retired soldiers known as the Chelsea Pensioners run guided tours of their residence, the Royal Hospital Chelsea.
It forms the “Historic Triangle” together with Jamestown and Yorktown. Its heart is Colonial Williamsburg, a historic district and living-history museum where actors in period costume depict daily Colonial life in the streets, stores and workshops.
The origins of Castelnuovo di Porto can be traced back to the history of the ancient city-state of Capena, capital of the Capenati, a flourishing Italic population that thrived north-west of the Tiber, before the advent of the Roman Empire. Autochthonous culture underwent external contamination over time, above all by the Etruscans, the Latins and the Sabines. They spoke a language related to Faliscan.
The centre of Dublin has a very organic feel to it, with its winding, narrow streets and low buildings. There is only one grand avenue in the centre and that is O’Connell Street. The rest of the streets is much more human in scale. Few buildings in the city centre are more than four stories high and an appealing mix of 18th century Georgian and 19th century Victorian styles dominates most streets in the centre. Life in Dublin’s city centre is charming, slightly chaotic and fairly laid back.
Fez was founded in 789 by Idris, the Arab ruler responsible for founding the Idrisid dynasty. Since then, it has earned itself a reputation as an important center of trade and learning. It has served as Morocco’s capital on several different occasions, and experienced its own Golden Age under the rule of the Marinids, the dynasty that presided over Fez during the 13th and 14th centuries. Many of the medina’s most iconic monuments (including its Islamic colleges, palaces, and mosques) date from this glorious period of the city’s history.
One of the oldest, the Passage des Panoramas, dates from 1799. It is home to the Théâtre des Variétés, inaugurated in 1807 and still providing entertainment. Each arcade has its own character.
Since it was built in 1836, Passage Jouffroy has been one of the most visited covered arcades in the capital. Situated on the Grands Boulevards and in the continuation of Passage des Panoramas, it owes its charm to its beautiful iron and glass architecture (the ogive glass roof immediately catches the eye) and its marble paving, renovated in 1987.
The Passage Verdeau houses numerous antique dealers. It is in the Grands Boulevards district, takes the name of its creator. Built in 1847, it is one of the most charming covered arcades in the capital. It is the continuation of two other well known arcades: Les Panoramas and Jouffroy. These sites are great for enjoying an original walk. A number of antiques dealers and unique shops (old books, postcards, collectors’ cameras, etc.) have set up in the Passage Verdeau.
