London Walks: Somerset House To Golden Jubilee Bridge & Southbank (4K)

Afternoon stroll from Somerset House 🏛, passing through the Strand and crossing the Golden Jubilee Bridge from Embankment to Southbank.

Somerset House, London’s arts centre, is the starting point for today’s afternoon walk. It’s a quiet corner, built on the foundations of one of Europe’s most beautiful courtyards. We then take a walk down the Strand, London’s first street with a numbered address, before crossing the River Thames from Embankment to Southbank, one of the city’s liveliest areas for alfresco dining and drinking.

New National Parks: New River Gorge, West Virginia

Visitors have been drawn to West Virginia by its mountains, winding roads, and wild rivers, but until last week, America’s 35th state had no national park. New River Gorge was awarded the honor of becoming the nation’s newest park – and the only national park in West Virginia.

A rugged, whitewater river flowing northward through deep canyons, the New River is among the oldest rivers on the continent. The park encompasses over 70,000 acres of land along the New River, is rich in cultural and natural history, and offers an abundance of scenic and recreational opportunities.

Night Walks: ‘Yasaka Tower’, Kyoto, Japan (5K)

Hokanji is a temple of the Rinzai sect Kenninji school in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto City. Located near Kiyomizu Temple. The five-storied pagoda is commonly known as the “Yasaka Tower” and is a landmark in the surrounding area.

Kyoto, once the capital of Japan, is a city on the island of Honshu. It’s famous for its numerous classical Buddhist temples, as well as gardens, imperial palaces, Shinto shrines and traditional wooden houses. It’s also known for formal traditions such as kaiseki dining, consisting of multiple courses of precise dishes, and geisha, female entertainers often found in the Gion district. 

Views: Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah

Bryce Canyon National Park, a sprawling reserve in southern Utah, is known for crimson-colored hoodoos, which are spire-shaped rock formations. The park’s main road leads past the expansive Bryce Amphitheater, a hoodoo-filled depression lying below the Rim Trail hiking path. It has overlooks at Sunrise Point, Sunset Point, Inspiration Point and Bryce Point. Prime viewing times are around sunup and sundown. 

Tourism: Venice Re-Opens To Much Smaller Crowds

Before the pandemic, the Italian city of Venice was overrun with tourists – so much so, it was looking for ways to restrict their numbers. Now though, it’s got the opposite problem. Empty streets and waterways, in a city that very much depends on tourism revenue. DW’s Max Zander reports on how Venice is looking to strike the right balance, as it re-opens for business.

Munich, Bavaria’s capital, is home to centuries-old buildings and numerous museums. The city is known for its annual Oktoberfest celebration and its beer halls, including the famed Hofbräuhaus, founded in 1589. In the Altstadt (Old Town), central Marienplatz square contains landmarks such as Neo-Gothic Neues Rathaus (town hall), with a popular glockenspiel show that chimes and reenacts stories from the 16th century.

Oslo, the capital of Norway, sits on the country’s southern coast at the head of the Oslofjord. It’s known for its green spaces and museums. Many of these are on the Bygdøy Peninsula, including the waterside Norwegian Maritime Museum and the Viking Ship Museum, with Viking ships from the 9th century. The Holmenkollbakken is a ski-jumping hill with panoramic views of the fjord. It also has a ski museum.

The Hague is a city on the North Sea coast of the western Netherlands. Its Gothic-style Binnenhof (or Inner Court) complex is the seat of the Dutch parliament, and 16th-century Noordeinde Palace is the king’s workplace. The city is also home to the U.N.’s International Court of Justice, headquartered in the Peace Palace, and the International Criminal Court.

Nachi Falls in Nachikatsuura, Wakayama Prefecture, Japan, is one of the best-known waterfalls in Japan. With a drop of 133 meters, it is the country’s tallest water fall with single uninterrupted drop; however, the tallest waterfalls with multiple drops in Japan are Hannoki Falls, at 497 m, and Shōmyō Falls, at 350m.
