Ocean Walks: ‘Hale’iwa Beach Park’, Oahu, Hawaii

Located in the small town of Hale’iwa on Oahu’s North Shore, Hale’iwa Beach Park (see more photosview panorama) is fronted by a narrow sand beach. Swimming isn’t that good here because of the shallow and rocky ocean bottom, but the park is nice for picnics.

Also, Hale’iwa Beach Park is frequently used by canoe paddlers as a training and regatta site and by kayakers as an access point to the bay. Surfers also like this beach because from here they can get to the waves at the surf spot Puaena Point. The name Hale’iwa in the Hawaiian language means “house (of) frigate bird.”

Cancún, a Mexican city on the Yucatán Peninsula bordering the Caribbean Sea, is known for its beaches, numerous resorts and nightlife. It’s composed of 2 distinct areas: the more traditional downtown area, El Centro, and Zona Hotelera, a long, beachfront strip of high-rise hotels, nightclubs, shops and restaurants. Cancun is also a famed destination for students during universities’ spring break period.

Castel Gandolfo, colloquially just Castello in the Castelli Romani dialects, is a town located 25 kilometres southeast of Rome in the Lazio region of Italy. 

Lake Albano is a small volcanic crater lake in the Alban Hills of Lazio, at the foot of Monte Cavo, 20 km southeast of Rome. Castel Gandolfo, overlooking the lake, is the site of the Papal Palace of Castel Gandolfo. It hosted the canoeing and rowing events of the 1960 Summer Olympic Games that were held in Rome.

Montego Bay, the capital of Saint James Parish on Jamaica’s north coast, is a major cruise ship port with numerous beach resorts and golf courses outside its commercial core. Popular beaches include Doctor’s Cave Beach and Walter Fletcher Beach, home to an amusement park. There’s also snorkelling and diving at coral reefs in the protected waters of Montego Bay Marine Park.

Its capital, Rome, is home to the Vatican as well as landmark art and ancient ruins. Other major cities include Florence, with Renaissance masterpieces such as Michelangelo’s “David” and Brunelleschi’s Duomo; Venice, the city of canals; and Milan, Italy’s fashion capital.

Messina is a harbor city in northeast Sicily, separated from mainland Italy by the Strait of Messina. It’s known for the Norman Messina Cathedral, with its Gothic portal, 15th-century windows and an astronomical clock on the bell tower. Nearby are marble fountains decorated with mythological figures, like the Fontana di Orione, with its carved inscriptions, and the Neptune Fountain, topped by a statue of the sea god.

Chania is a city on the northwest coast of the Greek island of Crete. It’s known for its 14th-century Venetian harbor, narrow streets and waterfront restaurants. At the harbor entrance is a 16th-century lighthouse with Venetian, Egyptian and Ottoman influences. Opposite, the Nautical Museum has model ships, naval objects and photographs. The former monastery of St. Francis houses the Archaeological Museum of Chania. 

Walking Tour: Pyrmont In Darling Harbour, Sydney

Pyrmont is a former industrial area on Darling Harbour, now known as a popular entertainment destination. Tourists and workers from newspaper and TV offices pack the restaurants along the wharf and in the Sydney Fish Market. The huge, slick Star casino complex offers further dining options, along with nightclubs, bars and designer shops. The on-site Sydney Lyric stages theatre, opera and ballet.
