New Walking Tour Video: ‘Ortaköy, Istanbul, Turkey’

Ortaköy (literally Middle Village in Turkish) in Greek known as Agios Fokas (Άγιος Φωκάς) in the Byzantine period and  Mesachorion  (Μεσαχώριον, meaning “middle village”) later, is a neighborhood, formerly a small village, within the Beşiktaş district of Istanbul, Turkey, located in the middle of the European bank of the Bosphorus.

Ortaköy was a cosmopolitan area during the Ottoman era and the first decades of the Turkish Republic, with communities of Turks, Greeks, Armenians and Jews. Today the neighborhood still hosts many different religious (Muslim, Jewish, Orthodox, and other Christian) structures. It is also a popular spot for locals and tourists alike, with its art galleries, night clubs, cafés, bars, and restaurants.

The Neo-Baroque style Ortaköy Mosque is a beautifully ornate structure, right on the jetty of Ortaköy, bordering the waters of the Bosphorus, and thus highly visible from the passing boats.

Myra (Ancient Greek: Μύρα, Mýra) was an ancient Greek, then Roman Greek, then Byzantine Greek, then Ottoman Greek town in Lycia, which became the small Turkish town of Kale, renamed Demre in 2005, in the present-day Antalya Province of Turkey. In 1923 its Greek inhabitants had been required to leave by the Population exchange between Greece and Turkey, at which time its church was finally abandoned. It was founded on the river Myros , in the fertile alluvial plain between Alaca Dağ, the Massikytos range and the Aegean Sea.

New Timelapse Travel Videos: ‘Sarajevo’ In Bosnia And Herzegovina

Filmed and Edited by: Joerg Daiber

Sarajevo is the capital and largest city of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Due to its long history of religious and cultural diversity, Sarajevo is sometimes called the “Jerusalem of Europe. It is one of only a few major European cities to have a mosque, Catholic church, Orthodox church and synagogue within the same neighborhood. In 1914, Sarajevo was the site of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria by local Young Bosnia activist Gavrilo Princip that sparked World War I. After World War II, the establishment of the Socialist Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina within the Second Yugoslavia led to a massive expansion of Sarajevo, which culminated with the hosting of the 1984 Winter Olympics marking a prosperous era for the city.

The next episode of Little Big World will feature the abandoned and destroyed venues of these Winter Olympics so stay tuned for more. However, after the start of the Yugoslav Wars, for 1,425 days, from April 1992 to February 1996, the city suffered the longest siege of a capital city in the history of modern warfare, during the Bosnian War. This city definately has seen a fair share of melodrama. That might be the reason why I have picked a music that may be a bit over the top in terms of drama for this film.

These days Sarajevo is the fastest growing city in Bosnia and Herzegovina and a prospering place with expanding tourism. It’s an amazing place to visit and you will get a good idea of this place in this 3 minutes video.
