Walks: Friedrichshafen – Bodensee, Germany (4K)

Friedrichshafen is a city on the shore of Lake Constance (Bodensee in German) in southern Germany. It’s known for its importance in aviation history, extensively documented in the Zeppelin Museum. Cafes dot its lakeside promenade. A steel tower on the lake’s pier offers views of the city and the Alps. The domed baroque towers of the Palace Church dominate the skyline, and are visible from the air on Zeppelin tours.

Lake Constance (known as Bodensee in German) is a 63km-long central European lake that borders Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Fed by the Rhine River, it’s composed of 2 connected parts, the Untersee (lower lake) and the larger Obersee (upper lake). Ringed by resort towns, it’s a summer destination for sailing, windsurfing and swimming. The Bodensee-Radweg cycle path encircles the entire lake in about 260km.

Along the way, the Porsche convoy stopped at the Dornier aircraft factories, the Gmünd paper mill and a plethora of fabulous hotels such as Ellmau Castle and the Kranzbach.
